Canterbury will move into a Restricted Fire Season from 11.59pm tonight, Fire and Emergency New Zealand has confirmed.
Under a Restricted Fire Season, all open air fires will require a permit before they can be lit.
Fire and Emergency said people who already hold permits must ensure they check and comply with all conditions attached to their permit, including monitoring weather conditions and local fire risk.
Residents are being urged to check the current fire season status in their area and to stay informed about rural fire safety requirements.
Permits can be applied for through the Fire and Emergency website, while further fire safety information is available online.
Fire and Emergency said restrictions are being put in place to reduce the risk of uncontrolled fires during drier conditions.
