A 55-year-old man has been arrested following a pre-planned search warrant at an address in Addington.

Witnesses reported that Cotterill Street was swarming with police vehicles and armed police on Thursday evening.

A nearby resident said the street was blocked from Poulson Street to Harman Street.

A police spokesperson told Chris Lynch Media the man will appear in Christchurch District Court tomorrow on charges of assaulting a child, impeding breathing/blood circulation and injuring with intent to injure.

Police would like to thank other residents in the area for allowing police to carry out this search effectively and safely the spokeswoman said
