National MP Matt Doocey has celebrated his projected re-election in Waimakariri, thanking voters for their support and promising to get straight back to work on two major local projects.

Speaking to chrislynchmedia.com on election night, Doocey said he was looking forward to delivering a bypass and an after-hours medical facility for the electorate.

“A big thank you to Waimakariri voters, it’s a privilege to be reelected. I’ve worked hard over the last 3 years, but there’s still more work to do.

“I’m looking forward to getting back into it on Monday. We’ve got a bypass to build and an after-hours medical facility to open.”

Doocey was speaking after joining National supporters at the Greater Christchurch election night gathering at Addington Raceway, where he was struck by the turnout.

“Just arrived at the Greater Christchurch National Election Night Party at Addington Raceway, blown away by the size of the crowd, its double the amount of people from three years ago.”

He said National had received strong support across the seven Greater Christchurch electorates during the campaign.

“It’s been a positive start in the polls tonight for National which is matched by the vibe in the room, it’s game on!”

Doocey had received 16,862 candidate votes, compared with Rosewarne’s 8,963, while National was also ahead in the electorate’s party vote.

The live election results website had classified Waimakariri as safe for National, although the result remained subject to the official count.

Doocey has represented Waimakariri since 2014, and his projected victory would extend his tenure to a fifth consecutive term.
