Highland thrills and weekend feels: What’s on across Canterbury / Hororata Highland Games

Scottish celebrations, live music, classic cars and the opening of Cup Week are among the attractions across Christchurch and Canterbury this weekend.

Whether you’re organising a family outing, catching up with friends or looking for something that won’t stretch the budget, there’s plenty happening from Friday 6 November to Sunday 8 November.

The Hororātā Highland Games celebrates its 15th year on Saturday, bringing pipe bands, Highland dancing and heavy athletics to Hororātā Domain.

Gates open to the public at 9am, with international competitors, more than 120 market and food stalls, live music, fairground rides and activities visitors can try themselves. It’s an opportunity to round up the family for a country day out, with Scottish traditions at the heart of the entertainment.

North Canterbury has another sizeable gathering on its calendar, with the Cust Rumble taking over Cust Domain on Saturday and Sunday.

The car and motorcycle festival features classic and modern vehicles, demonstrations, live music, food stalls and awards. Public hours are 10am to 10.30pm on Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sunday. Adult admission is $20, while children under 16 enter free.

Back in Christchurch, Riccarton Park begins its New Zealand Cup Week programme on Saturday with Barneswood Farm NZ 1000 Guineas Day.

It’s the first of three race meetings across the week, bringing racing, food and entertainment to the course. Saturday’s programme also includes an after-party with Rollestxn Ave and Sean Hill from 5.30pm.

For those keen to start the weekend with something to eat and a browse, the City Night Market runs at The Arts Centre Te Matatiki Toi Ora on Friday from 5pm to 9pm. Expect artisan stalls, street food and live entertainment.

Ferrymead Heritage Park also hosts its night market on Saturday, combining food, crafts and music with a visit to the heritage setting.

There’s free entertainment in the central city on Saturday when Road to FLARE joins forces with the Christchurch Hip Hop Summit.

Running from 10am to 3pm at Te Pae Green, the showcase features a national graffiti battle alongside live hip hop performances. Visitors can watch street artists compete and see their work develop throughout the day.

For families with very young children, Cubbin Theatre Company’s Up and Away continues at The Arts Centre through Sunday.

Designed specifically for babies who are not yet walking and their caregivers, the gentle performance combines live music and interactive play inside an open-sided tent. Weekend sessions take place at 10am and 11am in the Cloisters Studio, with small audiences and room for babies to explore.

Music fans have two major evening shows to choose from across the weekend.

Stan Walker brings A Symphonic Experience to Wolfbrook Arena on Saturday at 7.30pm, performing with a live band and orchestra.

On Sunday, Greg Johnson’s 60th Birthday Tour reaches the James Hay Theatre at Christchurch Town Hall, with the show starting at 8pm.

For a catch-up over local brews, the Christchurch Breweries Festival returns to Volstead Trading Company on Riccarton Road on Saturday.

Running from midday to 9pm, the festival brings together beers from across the region, alongside food and live music.

Sunday offers a chance to hunt for something with a bit of history at the ReVamp Vintage Market.

The free market runs from 10am to 2pm at the Air Force Museum of New Zealand in Wigram, with stalls selling vintage clothing, antiques, books, art and collectables.

For a quieter finish to the weekend, New Brighton Silver Band presents a free Remembrance Day concert at the Bandsmen’s Memorial Rotunda in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens.

The concert runs from 1.30pm to 2.30pm on Sunday and also marks the rotunda’s centenary.
