8.51PM: Labour is strengthening its position in several Christchurch electorates as election night results continue to come in, while National is maintaining substantial leads in Ilam and Selwyn.

In Christchurch East, Labour’s Reuben Davidson appears on track to retain his seat, with the electorate now classified as safe for Labour by the live election results website.

With 35.6 percent of voting places reporting, Davidson has secured 12,724 votes, giving him a commanding lead of 6,394 over National’s Alexandra Davids, who has received 6,330 votes.

Labour is also leading in Christchurch Central, where George Hampton has extended his advantage over National’s Dale Stephens.

Hampton has received 8,509 votes, compared with Stephens’ 5,765, giving him a lead of 2,744 votes with 32 percent reporting.

Green Party candidate Kahu Carter is third with 4,154 votes.

Meanwhile, National’s Hamish Campbell is maintaining a strong lead in Ilam.

Campbell has secured 9,193 votes, compared with Labour candidate Rata Jamieson’s 6,287, putting him 2,906 votes ahead with 32.2 percent reporting.

In Selwyn, National’s Nicola Grigg appears firmly on course to retain her electorate.

Grigg has received 13,966 votes, representing 55.8 percent of the candidate vote reported so far.

Labour’s Sunita Gautam has 5,389 votes, leaving Grigg with a substantial majority of 8,577 votes. The electorate is currently classified as safe for National.

However, one of Canterbury’s closest contests is unfolding in Wigram, where Labour’s Dominik Yanzick is facing a strong challenge from National’s Tracy Summerfield.

Yanzick has secured 8,232 votes, compared with Summerfield’s 7,479, a margin of just 753 votes.

With only 23.1 percent of voting places reporting, the electorate remains too close to call.

Labour won Wigram at the 2023 election, but the early figures suggest the contest could be considerably tighter this time.

The latest figures, captured shortly before 8.50pm, indicate Labour is leading in Christchurch East, Christchurch Central and Wigram, while National is ahead in Ilam and Selwyn.
