Opportunity Party leader Qiulae Wong has offered to have her Auckland Marathon result disqualified after running under another competitor’s name.
The NZ Herald reports Wong competed in Sunday’s 11km event using a race number registered to someone else, despite the deadline for transferring entries having passed.
The controversy emerged after the party published photographs of Wong crossing the finish line.
Official results recorded bib number 35013 under the name Shuari Naidoo, with a finishing time of one hour, one minute and 29 seconds.
An Opportunity spokesperson initially defended Wong’s participation, telling the Herald that race officials had approved the arrangement.
“Qiulae received her registration by transfer from another competitor after the date that it was possible to change the registration to her name. Race officials were informed and they were happy for Qiulae to run,” the spokesperson said.
However, Wong has now acknowledged the entry had not been formally transferred before the deadline and has offered to have her result disqualified.
“After learning of Runaway Auckland Marathon’s terms and conditions, I acknowledge that a name transfer was not completed before the cut-off time,” Wong told the Herald.
“I offered to have my result disqualified and accept that it is an appropriate outcome.”
