All South Island state highways and alpine passes have reopened following snow closures this morning, but motorists are being urged to take care.

NZ Transport Agency has confirmed that State Highway 7 between the Hanmer Springs turnoff and Springs Junction, including Lewis Pass, was open again.

State Highway 73 between Arthur’s Pass Village and Otira had reopened by mid morning after crews worked to clear snow.

The closures were announced earlier this morning, with NZTA reporting SH73 was shut at 8am, followed by SH7 at 8.30am.

Police said Lewis Pass had been affected by heavy snowfall and advised motorists to drive to the conditions and reduce their speed if conditions changed.

NZTA urged continued care when travelling, despite all routes reopening.
