Two men killed in a double homicide in Christchurch have been identified as Glen “Lizard” Tukaki and Nigel Robinson, who was originally from Timaru.

Police were called to the residential complex on Olliviers Road in Phillipstown about 12.50am on Saturday, where the men, aged in their 50s, died at the scene.

Two other people were taken to hospital, one with serious injuries and another in a critical condition, a St John spokesman said.

Tukaki, a former president of the Christchurch chapter of the Devils Henchmen Motorcycle Club, was a father of two and grandfather of three, a former friend said.

Police have not confirmed a motive for the killings, but Chris Lynch Media understands it was not gang related.

A former member, who knew Tukaki for more than 30 years, spoke to chrislynchmedia.com about his life, revealing he had suffered several strokes in recent years, affecting his mobility and speech.

The man he had known Tukaki since the 1990s. “He was a very respected, a very quiet man. He didn’t ever really get violent or angry, he was just Lizard.”

He said Tukaki had been a life member of the Devils Henchmen Motorcycle Club and had served as president of its Christchurch chapter for more than a decade.

In recent years, however, Tukaki’s health had deteriorated significantly.

“He basically had suffered a couple of strokes over the last few years. He was very hard to communicate with him, and his ability to walk was limited.”

The man also recalled Tukaki’s longstanding connections to Christchurch, including attending Riccarton High School.

He said the Devils Henchmen once operated a clubhouse on Port Hills Road near Hillsborough Park, where Tukaki had been a respected leader among fellow members.

A separate friend of those involved also spoke to chrislynchmedia.com, saying the victims were loved by people who knew them personally, regardless of their pasts.

The friend, who did not want to be named, spoke about the impact the deaths would have on those left behind saying those who knew them most were in shock.

He said “mental health” had a lot to answer for.

A 58-year-old Christchurch man has been charged with two counts of murder, attempted murder and wounding with intent. He is due to appear in the Christchurch District Court on Monday.

Detective Inspector Greg Murton confirmed the victims knew the man accused of their murders. “There was an incident in one flat there involving a person from another flat going to that address, and then the incident happened there,” Murton said.

A neighbour told chrislynchmedia.com she saw about six police vehicles, an ambulance and armed officers outside the property after the incident.

She saw one injured person walked towards an ambulance, while another was taken away on a stretcher.

Police blocked off the street while emergency services attended the scene. Murton said investigators were not looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths.

“This was a very isolated incident. There are no concerns for the wider community or other residents of that complex, and we do understand and appreciate how upsetting this is for them.”

Anyone with information or CCTV footage from the area is asked to contact police on 105, quoting file number 261010/6589.

Information can also be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
