A 58-year-old man has been charged with two counts of murder following a double homicide in Phillipstown, Christchurch.

The man is also facing one charge of attempted murder and one charge of wounding with intent following the incident on Saturday morning.

Detective Inspector Greg Murton said the man will appear in the Christchurch District Court on Monday 12 October.

Two people died at the scene, while two others were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

As first reported by Chris Lynch Media, police were called to a property on Olliviers Road about 12.50am.

Murton said police believe the incident was isolated and are not seeking anyone else in connection with the investigation at this stage.

Police have reassured the public there is no ongoing risk to their safety.

However, Murton acknowledged the deaths would be deeply upsetting and unsettling for people living in the neighbourhood.

Residents can expect an increased police presence over the coming days as forensic examinations continue at the property.

A resident on the street who provided Chris Lynch Media with the late night photos said police told her stabbings took place.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed suspicious activity or has CCTV footage from the area to come forward.

A St John spokesperson told chrislynchmedia.com they were notified at 12:11am of the incident.

“Two rapid response units, three ambulances and one operations manager responded to the scene.

“Our ambulance staff treated two patients and transported them to Christchurch Public Hospital.

“One patient was in a serious condition and the other was in a critical condition. Please contact NZ Police for further enquiries.”
