Police have launched a homicide investigation after two people were found dead at separate properties in the Buller region.

Detective Inspector Geoff Baber, Tasman District Police, said emergency services were called to an address on State Highway 7 at Rahu Saddle about 7.50am on Tuesday following concerns for a person.

A person was found dead at the property.

Police carried out further enquiries and later went to another address on Maimai Road, where a second person was found dead.

Baber said police did not believe there was any risk to the public and were not looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths.

An increased police presence is expected in the area as investigators gather information and work to establish exactly what happened.

“We acknowledge people will be understandably shaken following this incident. We are providing support to the loved ones of those who died and the wider community,” Baber said.

Police said further information would be released when available.
