Vehicles are being towed through heavy snow in Arthur’s Pass as wintry conditions create difficult driving conditions across parts of the South Island.

Images supplied to chrislynchmedia.com show vehicles struggling through snow on the alpine route, with towing assistance needed to help motorists continue their journeys.

NZ Transport Agency said heavy snowfall was affecting several highways on Sunday.

State Highway 7 between the Hanmer Springs turnoff and Springs Junction, including Lewis Pass, is now closed because of heavy snow.

There is no detour available, and motorists are being asked to avoid the area or delay their journeys if possible.

On State Highway 73, the sections from Otira to Arthur’s Pass and Springfield to Castle Hill are closed to towing vehicles, with snow chains required.

In the Mackenzie Basin, several vehicles became stuck on State Highway 8 near Lake Pukaki, with road crews ploughing snow to help motorists get moving again.

Further south, warnings remain in place for State Highway 8 between Omarama and Tarras, including Lindis Pass, State Highway 85 between Omakau and Kyeburn, and the Crown Range Road.

NZTA said various other warnings remain in place across the central South Island, and motorists are being urged to use caution and check the latest road and weather conditions before travelling.
