Four Christchurch sites have been shortlisted for the March 15 National Memorial, with bereaved families and people injured in the mosque attacks being asked for their views.

The locations under consideration are Central Ōtākaro, South Ōtākaro, South Rolleston Avenue and Victoria Lake.

Manatū Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage said the affected community, including families of the 51 people killed and those injured, had been closely involved in identifying potential sites.

No preferred location has been selected.

Secretary for Culture and Heritage Leauanae Laulu Mac Leauanae said feedback from affected families was central to the process.

“It’s absolutely crucial that the affected families have time to consider the sites and tell us what they think,” he said.

“The impacts of that dreadful day were felt throughout Christchurch, Aotearoa and further afield. But they were most keenly felt by those who lost people or were injured.

“Our nation responded to the events of March 15 with love, compassion and unity. That is something we can be proud of as a country.”

Leauanae said the ministry would continue working closely with Christchurch City Council, the Ministry for Ethnic Communities and mana whenua to find an appropriate site and establish the memorial.

Under the selection process, the affected community is asked for feedback before Christchurch City Council makes an offer of a site or sites.

The ministry will then select a preferred site.
