Police are continuing their investigation into a fatal dog attack which claimed the life of a young child in Aranui.

Emergency services were called to a Basingstoke Street address at about 4.45pm on Friday following reports a child had suffered serious dog bite injuries.

Detective Senior Sergeant Dan Overend said emergency services found the child in a critical condition.

Despite efforts by first responders and a member of the household, the child died at the scene.

Police said the dog involved was known to the occupants and lived at the property.

In an update on Saturday, Overend said police were continuing to make enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the death.

This included speaking with those who live at the home and providing them with support.

The dog has since been removed from the property, and police are in contact with Christchurch City Council Animal Control.

Police had earlier carried out a scene examination at the Basingstoke Street property, with the occupants assisting officers with their enquiries.

Police have expressed their condolences to the child’s family and loved ones and asked that their privacy be respected.

Christchurch City Council’s Animal Management Team is responsible for administering and enforcing dog control requirements within the city.
