It was snowing in Sumner on Tuesday, which Jean Rogers thought was a poor effort from the weather on her 100th birthday. She would much rather have been in the garden.

“The lawns and the edges,” she said, listing what was going untended. Instead, Rogers spent the day at Edith Cavell Village, where fellow residents laid on food, sang to her and gave three cheers. She was spared having to clap 100 times.

If turning 100 felt significant, she was not letting on. “I don’t feel any different from what I did yesterday,” she said.

Asked how she felt yesterday, the answer came back without a pause. “Like I feel today.”

She was, she confirmed, quite happy about that. Told she was looking well for a woman of a century, Rogers gave a small adjustment to the paper crown she had been given for the occasion. “I’ll just shift my halo closer.”

The crown itself she was less certain about. Told it made her look like a princess, she pushed back. “I’d rather be like a prince.”

Her ambitions for the day ran to two items. “I want to have three meals a day. I want to enjoy everybody.”
