A person has died and another has been seriously injured in a crash near Pleasant Point.

Emergency services were called to the single vehicle crash on SH79 between Geraldine and Fairlie, between Gudex Road and Earl Road, about 9pm on Saturday.

NZTA said SH79 was closed between Gudex Road and Earl Road, and road users were advised to avoid the area or use an alternative route.

A detour was in place, though it is not suitable for heavy vehicles.

The seriously injured person was airlifted to hospital.
