Rakaia Highway is closed in Allenton following a serious two vehicle crash early Monday morning.

A police spokesperson said crash was reported just after 5am between Racecourse Road and Northpark Road.

Initial indications are that people have suffered serious injuries.

The highway is closed between Racecourse Road and Northpark Road while emergency services respond.

A motorist at the scene said a passenger had been killed in the crash and a rescue helicopter was also there.

Diversions are in place and motorists are being advised to avoid the area.
