Firefighters battle large blaze in Rolleston, and other parts of Canterbury

Firefighters are battling a large vegetation fire on Selwyn Road in Rolleston, with residents being urged to stay away from the area while crews work to bring the blaze under control.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said crews remained at the scene of the fire on Saturday afternoon.

“We are in attendance at a large fire on Selwyn Road, Rolleston. Please stay away from the area to allow our crews to work safely to get this fire under control,” the spokesperson said.

The fire was still active as of 4.15pm, with emergency services continuing efforts to contain it.

Chris Lynch Media understands a barn has been destroyed by the fire and surrounding trees have also caught alight.

The cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed.

Motorists and members of the public are being asked to avoid the area and leave access routes clear for emergency vehicles.

Fires across Canterbury

Firefighters are responding to several other vegetation fires caused by strong winds in Canterbury this afternoon, including a fire in a forestry block in Hurinui.

Fire and Emergency Assistant District Commander Brian Keown is urging people to check on any fires including burn-offs lit in the past two weeks to ensure that they were not reigniting, and to avoid lighting any fires in the current conditions.
Crews were dispatched to a forest fire in O’Carrolls Rd, Hawarden, in Hurunui District at 2.18pm today.

Up to 16 crews supported by a helicopter are working to bring the fire under control.
Earlier, firefighters from seven brigades responded to a hedge fire at McQueens Valley Road in Gebbies Valley, near Christchurch around 12.30pm

Eight appliances are also attending a wildfire in Mount Culverden which was reported about 2.30pm
