A Christchurch boxer has been named in the New Zealand team for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, to be held in Senegal from October 31 to November 13.
Lea Newman, who competes in the women’s 51kg division, earned her place after representing New Zealand at the U19 Futures Cup in Bangkok, Thailand in March, which served as a key qualification pathway for the Games.
Newman was allocated the sole female quota place available to Boxing New Zealand for the Youth Olympic Games, with her performances at the Futures Cup playing an important role in confirming her selection.
NZOC chief executive Nicki Nicol said the selection is a significant milestone for the young athlete.
“Wearing the silver fern and representing New Zealand is something every athlete takes great pride in,” Nicol said.
“It’s a special moment for Lea and the people who have supported her on her journey so far.”
Boxing New Zealand convenor of selectors Sam Watt said Newman’s selection reflected her conduct and attitude throughout the development pathway, not just her performances in the ring.
Boxing New Zealand president Josh Wharehinga said Newman had earned her selection through consistent performances and commitment in training.
“Boxing NZ is incredibly proud of Lea for consistently performing at a high level and showing the dedication in training that has put her in a strong position for selection,” Wharehinga said.
“The opportunity to be part of a New Zealand team environment and compete internationally is a vital part of Lea’s development as an emerging athlete and future member of our elite boxing team.”
Dakar 2026 will be the fourth Summer Youth Olympic Games and the first Olympic event held on the African continent.
A Give a little page has been set up to help Lea get to the Youth Olympics.
