A new playground has opened to the public, with the Coastal Ward Community Board member who championed it saying it rivals the best in Christchurch.
It’s right behind Ascot Hub (12 Ascot Avenue, North New Brighton.
“This is a huge win for East Christchurch and rivals the likes of the Margaret Mahy Playground,” Alex Hewison said. “Every kid should have a space to play and learn, and it couldn’t have come at a better time.”

Hewison said he had pushed to revive the project after finding it had stalled when he was first elected.
“When I got elected and found out this project had stalled, I worked with staff and pushed the importance of spaces like these for our community,” he said. “They have done an incredible job to get this moving, and it will become a space for community, families and friends to connect.”

“This community has been through so much since the earthquakes, and I am stoked that there is now a fit for purpose, all ages playground for so many to enjoy,” he said.

The playground includes a climbing piece, swings, sandpit, nature play area, basketball court and interactive elements. A running track and toilet block are still to be added.

Hewison said the playspace was one of several investments on the east side of the city, alongside work at the New Brighton Mall and the broader QE2 Masterplan, with a private driving range also in the pipeline.

“I will continue to advocate for better amenities, infrastructure, and community spaces,” he said.
