A community event aimed at promoting local resilience, food security and sustainable transport is set to take place in Christchurch today.
Organisers have invited residents to walk, cycle or bus along the City to Sea Pathway to attend the Richmond Gala on Saturday, running from 10am to 2pm.
They said the event came at a time when fuel costs and global uncertainty were front of mind for many households, encouraging people to stay local and support community networks.
“The City to Sea Pathway connects people to places, and the Richmond Gala is the perfect place to end up,” organisers said.
“You can enjoy the river, arrive without spending on fuel, and support the local organisations and producers that help keep our community resilient.”

More than 30 local organisations are expected to take part, many focused on food, sustainability, wellbeing and community support.
Highlights include a wonky vegetable competition celebrating imperfect produce, a preserve competition showcasing traditional skills, and a sausage sizzle sponsored by New World Stanmore.
Visitors can also expect Devonshire tea at Avebury House, fresh produce at the Riverlution Market, craft stalls from local makers, and live music from a DJ.
Organisers said the gala offered practical and positive ways for people to respond to current challenges by supporting local growers, sharing knowledge and strengthening neighbourhood connections.
Families will be catered for with children’s activities around the paddling pool, organised by We Are Richmond.
Attendees are being encouraged to make the journey part of the experience, using the City to Sea Pathway and riverside routes along the Avon River.
Bike parking will be available on River Road, and a full timetable of activities will be provided on the day.
“In uncertain times, coming together matters more than ever,” organisers said.
“This Saturday is about supporting local, moving sustainably, and celebrating what makes Richmond strong.”
The Richmond Gala will be held at multiple entry points, including Vogel Street, River Road and Evelyn Couzins Avenue.
