State Highway 75 through Halswell in Christchurch will close overnight for about a week later this month as final roadworks are completed.

The road will be closed each night from 8pm to 6am starting Sunday 22 March.

The closure will run along Halswell Road between Augustine Drive and Monsaraz Boulevard and Curletts Road.

Intersections along this section will also be closed, including Hendersons Road, Cardinal Drive, Warren Crescent south, Rowley Avenue, Warren Crescent north, Kinnaird Place and Tankerville Road.

There will be no access in or out of Halswell Road or the affected side streets during the closures.

An NZTA spokesperson said the night work was required to complete the final stage of the project.

“We need to close the road so roadworkers can lay the final asphalt and complete line marking along this stretch of Halswell Road and its side street intersections.

“We’ll be doing this work at night as it keeps everyone safe, helps us finish faster and reduces disruption. It also delivers a smoother finish, improving the overall travel experience for everyone using this road.”

Signposted detours will be in place via Hoon Hay Road and Sparks Road.

The agency said it understood the closures could be disruptive and encouraged motorists to plan ahead.

“We know closures can be disruptive, and we appreciate everyone’s cooperation while we get this work completed. To avoid these closures affecting your travel plans we recommend using your favourite mapping app to plan ahead to avoid delays.”

The work is the final major stage of the Halswell Road improvements project, which is aimed at improving bus travel times and reliability while giving people more travel options in the area.

Bus Route 7 will also be affected, with Metro Canterbury expected to place notices at impacted bus stops and introduce a detour while the night closures are in place.

The work is weather dependent and updates will be provided if conditions change.
