A series of public events have been organised across Christchurch and Lyttelton over the coming days to mark the 175th anniversary of the city’s founding and to reflect on the arrival of the Canterbury Pilgrims in 1850.

Ferrymead Heritage Park is the focus of the celebrations this weekend, opening on December 13 and 14 from 10am.

The park is offering visitors a nostalgic look back in time with heritage displays, entertainment, train and tram rides, food, and activities for all ages.

Ferrymead is offering 25 percent off the entry ticket price for anyone arriving in period clothing.

The Canterbury Pilgrims and Early Settlers Association is taking part with a static display inside the old chapel just inside the entrance gates at Ferrymead Heritage Park.

The chapel remains in use as a wedding venue and has been marked by the association’s teardrop flag outside.

11am Sat 13th December – Be at the start of the Bridle Path on Lyttelton side near the pilgrim’s seat and join other members walking the Bridle Path over the hill to Ferrymead.

A Choral Evensong will be held at 5pm on December 14 at the Christ Church Transitional Cathedral to commemorate the 175th anniversary of Christchurch.

The service has been led by The Very Reverend Ben Truman, with the Bishop in attendance, and will be open to the public.

Further commemorations have been scheduled for December 16 at 10am at the Lyttelton Precinct on Oxford Street.

The Canterbury Pilgrims and Early Settlers Association will commemorate the settlers’ arrival 175 years with the laying of a wreath, a speech by the association president, an address from Christchurch Mayor Phil Mauger, and a blessing led by the Reverend John McLister.

The commemorations will conclude on December 21 at 9.30am at Lyttelton Anglican St Saviours and Holy Trinity Church, where a service will be held with special mention of the Canterbury Pilgrims who sailed to Canterbury in 1850.

All events have been open to the public, with Canterbury residents encouraged to attend and take part in marking the region’s early beginnings.
