North Canterbury’s newest night out is set for later this month, with The Big Art Auction raising funds for Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Canterbury.

For one evening, the Rangiora Borough School Hall will become a gallery and auction room as the Rangiora Art Society opens its Spring Exhibition.

More than 700 original works from over 70 local artists will be on show, with live and silent auctions, music, complimentary drinks and canapés, raffles and the chance to meet the artists.

Programme manager Ellie Le Gros said every ticket and every bid helps match local children with trusted adult mentors.

“Every ticket and every bid supports young people to unlock their potential by being matched with a mentor who shows up, believes in them, and makes a lasting difference. It is a night where art really does change lives,” she said.

Local painter Greg Anderson said the cause is personal. “When I was a young single dad, my daughter had a mentor through Big Brothers Big Sisters. It meant I could keep being a dad and go back to University. Now I am proud to give back through my art because I know first hand the impact mentoring can have.”

Rangiora Art Society treasurer Julie Hassall said the collaboration is a natural fit. “Our members are thrilled to showcase their work while supporting a programme that makes such a difference in young people’s lives. It is going to be a special night where art lovers can take home something truly meaningful,” she said.

The evening will be hosted by rugby league great and programme patron Frank Endacott, with local auctioneer Nathan Gilbert of Harcourts Four Seasons Realty taking the gavel. Proceeds from donated works in The Big Art Auction will go to Big Brothers Big Sisters, which provides one to one mentoring.
