Update 2pm:State Highway 73 between Arthur’s Pass to Otira has reopened after a brief closure because of snow.

Heavy snowfall this morning has led to the closure of State Highway 73 between Arthur’s Pass and Otira, with motorists being urged to avoid the route and delay any non-essential travel.

The New Zealand Transport Agency confirmed the closure earlier today and said conditions remain hazardous along the alpine highway.

Drivers are being advised to check the latest highway conditions, closures, and restrictions via the NZTA Journey Planner before setting out.

People can check the latest on conditions on the state highways, including any closures and restrictions, at our Journey Planner site.

In light of the wintry conditions affecting the central South Island, NZTA is also urging road users to adjust their driving behaviour.

“People should think about reducing speeds, increasing following distances, and being especially cautious with braking or turning,” an NZTA spokesperson said. “Visibility can change quickly in these conditions, and roads can become slippery.”

Motorists are reminded to carry chains when travelling in alpine areas and to check weather forecasts and road status regularly, especially during the peak of the winter season.
