Two major state highways in the South Island’s Mackenzie Country have reopened this morning after being closed overnight due to snow and ice.

State Highway 8 between Twizel and Fairlie, and State Highway 80 between Lake Pukaki and Aoraki Mount Cook, were closed at 6pm yesterday as a safety precaution for road users and maintenance crews.

An NZTA spokesperson said both routes were reopened around 10am today following treatment of icy patches.

“Our crews have been out gritting and breaking up areas of ice, but we’re still urging drivers to take extreme care, especially in shaded areas where ice may remain.”

Other highways in the South Island that were closed by snow yesterday remain open, but NZTA is advising motorists to plan ahead, check road conditions using the Journey Planner, and allow extra time for travel.

“Snow and ice can make conditions unpredictable. Drive to the conditions, maintain safe following distances, and be aware that visibility may be reduced in some areas,” the spokesperson said.
