Two state highways in the South Island’s Mackenzie Country will close again from 6pm tonight as snow flurries, melting snow and freezing temperatures continue to create hazardous driving conditions.
State Highway 8 between Twizel and Fairlie, and State Highway 80 between Lake Pukaki and Aoraki Mount Cook, will remain closed until at least tomorrow morning.
An NZTA spokesperson said, “The combination of fresh snow expected overnight, snow melt during the day, and freezing temperatures means there’s a high risk of black ice forming. For everyone’s safety, we’re closing these roads again from 6pm so our crews can keep working to break up ice and lay grit.”
Crews will reassess both highways in the morning before any decision is made about reopening.
While other South Island highways that were affected by snow earlier today have reopened, the spokesperson urged drivers to remain cautious.
“Even where roads are open, icy patches can still form overnight. If travel isn’t essential, we recommend delaying your journey until conditions improve.”
