Former Christchurch City Councillor and broadcaster James Daniels has confirmed he will stand for the Coastal Ward in this year’s local body elections, after stepping away in 2021 for a national radio role.

Daniels, who previously represented the ward, said that while his decision to leave Council for a broadcasting opportunity with Newstalk ZB was unexpected, his heart never left the East.

“I was headhunted and offered a once-in-a-lifetime chance to work alongside Simon Barnett,” he said. “As radio has been my life, it was an incredible opportunity — but one that meant stepping away from Council.”

Daniels acknowledged that some residents may question his decision to return and said he welcomes that conversation.

“I understand some people felt let down by my decision — I hear you, and I’m sorry,” he said. “But life takes twists and turns, and my life and heart have always been centred in the East.”

Since finishing up in radio in 2024, Daniels has been working in the family business alongside his children and says he’s remained closely connected to local issues. Now, he says, it’s time to step back in — because the Coastal community needs a stronger voice at the council table.

“I’ve watched what’s been happening around the Council table, and I’m frustrated,” Daniels said. “Phil Mauger is a good man, trying hard to do the right thing for Christchurch, but he doesn’t have the numbers to get practical outcomes across the line — especially for our side of the city. Coastal deserves better.”

While he doesn’t always agree with Mauger, Daniels said their strong working relationship based on mutual respect would be an asset.

“What Phil needs are more independent, experienced councillors willing to roll up their sleeves and get stuck in. That’s what I bring.”

Daniels plans to campaign on a platform of practical, community-first priorities, including pushing back on excessive rate hikes, investing in local businesses, strengthening housing and infrastructure, and cutting out what he calls “party politics” from Council decision-making.

“I’ve always been fiercely independent. I’m not part of a voting bloc, and I don’t take instructions from any party or special interest group,” he said. “I vote based on what’s right for our people and our future.”

With deep local roots, long-standing community involvement, and a high-profile media background, Daniels believes he has the skills and credibility to deliver for the people of Coastal.

“I know how to communicate, I know how to listen, and I know how to bring people together to solve problems. This is about making smart, sensible, long-term decisions — for us and for the generations that follow.”
