Three homes in Akaroa have been evacuated due to a potential landslip risk identified on Lighthouse Road.

Fire and Emergency crews assessed the area and advised residents to leave as a safety precaution.

The evacuation follows the appearance of cracks along the road, prompting additional concerns about the stability of the surrounding hillside.

A Christchurch City Council spokesperson said the council is waiting for the outcome of a geotechnical assessment before confirming the next steps. The area remains under close observation as experts work to determine the extent of the risk.

Christchurch Mayor Phil Mauger said officials are keeping a close eye on the situation across the city.

While the basins are built to help control flooding, they could cause issues if pushed beyond their capacity.

He urged anyone considering leaving their homes overnight to call the Civil Defence emergency line for help.

The Heathcote River has already spilled over in some areas, and further flooding is possible.

Meanwhile, Fire and Emergency NZ crews are continuing to support response efforts across Christchurch, Selwyn, and Banks Peninsula, where local states of emergency remain in place.

A spokespersons said teams have responded to numerous calls for help due to widespread flooding and will remain active throughout the evening, assisting impacted communities across the region.
