Two high profile Christchurch heritage buildings are for sale – “as is where is.”

What’s left of the Odeon Theatre on Tuam Street and neighbouring Lawrie & Wilson Auctioneers property are on the market.

The Theatre was partially demolished in 2015.

It made the Christchurch City Council’s “dirty 30 buildings” list for its “eyesore” appearance in the central city.

The New Zealand Historic Places Trust ranks the theatre as a Category 1 building, and Lawrie & Wilson Auctioneers as a Category two.

Government owned rebuild agency Ōtākaro took possession of the theatre from Land and Information New Zealand last year.

A spokesman said “the offering is 761sq m of vacant land fronting onto Tuam and Manchester Streets.”

“Much of Christchurch now has a shiny new face, so the opportunity to apply your skills and vision to not one but two buildings with the architectural and historic presence of the Odeon Theatre and Laurie Wilson building will not come again.”

The Odeon Theatre was built in 1883.

It was the oldest purpose built, masonry theatre in New Zealand according to High Street Stories.

It was first known as the Tuam Street Hall or Theatre and was a popular venue for all types of public meetings, entertainment and exhibitions.

During the 1880s and 90s the theatre functioned as a roller skating rink in conjunction with other activities.

One of the most notable and nationally significant uses was for the public meetings held in 1893 when Kate Sheppard led the campaign for women’s suffrage from Christchurch.
