Light snow has fallen on parts of the Port Hills prompting authorities to issue a warning for drivers to take extreme care on the roads.

The Metservice says there will be showers, becoming confined to Banks Peninsula this afternoon then clearing everywhere this evening. Brisk southwesterlies, gradually easing.

Tomorrow is looking better for Christchurch: Fine with a frosty start. Southwesterlies dying out in the morning.

Snow flurries on the Lewis Pass are expected to clear this morning.
