Emergency services are at the scene of a light aircraft crash on rural land between Twizel and Tekapo.

The plane was reported overdue by a local aeroclub around 4:23pm.

A Rescue Coordination Centre spokesman says the microlight has one person aboard.

He the plane has crashed near the Lake Pukaki Spillway.

He says the pilot took off at 2pm this afternoon.

Two helicopters are at the scene including a chopper from Dunedin.

A police spokeswoman says shortly after 5pm the plane was reported crashed.

Fire appliances from across the Mackenzie region are attending the crash.
