One person has been charged following a crash on Bridge Street, Rakaia in the early hours of Sunday morning.

A 14-year-old girl and another teenager remain in Christchurch hospital after the stolen car they were allegedly in crashed into a fence.

A police spokesperson earlier said officers tried to pull over the car at about 4.22am in Rolleston.

The vehicle failed to stop and police pursued it for a short time before abandoning due to the nature of driving.

A high ranking police officer told Chris Lynch on Tuesday the car was allegedly driving on the wrong side of the road.

The spokesperson says the vehicle was later found by police on Bridge St, around 4:40am where it had collided with a fence and then rolled.

Police say as the matter is before the Youth Court, police will not be confirming any further details.

Of the patients involved in this incident, one has been discharged and one is in a stable condition.

Six requested privacy.
