19 jobs will be lost when New World Redcliffs rebrands to a Four Square.

Foodstuffs South Island General Manager Tim Donaldson says “shopping habits of the Redcliffs community has changed in recent years and despite our very best efforts, the store has proved to be unsustainable as a New World.”

He says “Foodstuffs remains committed to continuing to serve the Redcliffs community, but when a store in its current format proves unsustainable, we need to look for alternative options. Considering the impact on staff and the community are first and foremost.”

“A proposal to transition New World Redcliffs to a Four Square was put to the team in early March and their feedback sought:”

“While the nation took on the task of eliminating COVID-19, Foodstuffs deferred consideration of the team’s feedback and the final decision, to fully focus on making sure South Islanders had access to their grocery essentials, during Government Alert Level 4.”

“The decision to transition New World Redcliffs to a Four Square hasn’t been made lightly,” says Donaldson.

“We believe a transition from New World to Four Square presents the best opportunity for the store to become sustainable and thrive into the future.”

New World Redcliffs currently employs 29 full time and 19 part time staff.

Four Square Redcliffs will employ 17 full time and 12 part time staff.

Staff at New World Redcliffs have all had the opportunity to apply for roles within the Four Square and our HR Team will facilitate those looking for alternative employment within the Foodstuffs network, connecting them with stores, and Foodstuffs managers, who have suitable roles.

“It’s a challenging time for the team, they do a great job and we’re doing all we can to support them,” concluded Donaldson.

The store will transition to a Four Square on 15 June, continuing to trade as a New World up until this date.
