Police have released the name of the man who died on Don Street in Invercargill early yesterday.

25-year-old Chad Parekura was found unconscious with stab wounds and died at the scene.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Baird said Chad was living and working in the Southland area and we extend our deepest sympathies to his family who never expected to be in this terrible position.”

The second victim, a 22-year-old Invercargill man, remains in the Southland Hospital Critical Care Unit in a stable condition.

“Our enquiries have established that our two the victims had been socialising in the area during the evening and prior to the assault”

“There were a number of people in Don Street at the time and we want to thank everyone who has come forward to give us information about what they observed.”

“If you were on Don Street, either on foot or in a vehicle around 12.45am yesterday, then we strongly urge you to make contact with the investigation team.”

A Givealittle page has been set up.

It said “it is with great sadness a young father’s life has been taken. Anyone that knows Chad knows he was a very proud father of his son Tatum- Reign Parekura who will now have to grow up without his daddy.”

“We are fundraising to help relieve his family over the stresses that come with such a tragedy and for his son Tatum’s future.”

“Chad grew up in Lower Hutt, he has always been very proud of where he was from and had moved down to Invercargill to work in farming, he really did turn his whole life around for his family when this happened to him.”

Don Street is now open and the forensic examination of the scene has been completed.

A post mortem is expected to be carried out tomorrow.
