Fire investigators are expected to be back at the scene of a house fire in New Brighton tomorrow morning.
Firefighters were called to Mountbatten Street just after 2pm.
Homeowner Kirsty and her 13-year-old son had just been to the local service station when they arrived home to find their house on fire.
Heavily pregnant woman Mya Inglis managed to rescue the family’s dog from the backyard of the burning property.
Her son was checked over by St John Ambulance staff but was ok.
Several hours after the fire, Kirsty said she was still in shock and had lost everything.
A resident who lives across the road said she heard a massive bang and went outside and saw thick black smoke coming from the house.
“We feel absolutely guttered for the family, seeing her entire home destroyed along with all her belongings and memories. It’s a really hard blow for the family”
Kirsty’s friends arrived at the scene and were taking care of her and her 13-year-old son for the night.
Kirsty told Chris Lynch she was grateful for the offers of support and was still processing what had happened.
“I’ve still got the two most important things in my life, my son and my dog.”
Fire and Emergency NZ Senior Advisor Community Readiness & Recovery Wayne Hamilton said the fire spread very quickly through the house.
“There was also significant fire damage to a neighbouring property, and minor damage to another.
Hamilton said today’s incident was a timely reminder to not attempt to re-enter a property on fire and always have an escape plan.
