Lyttelton landslide evacuees were still unable to return home on Friday as geotechnical engineers assess the properties, the stability of the slip and the risk to nearby homes on Hawkhurst Road.
Two families were evacuated from their homes late Thursday night after a landslide came down behind one property, threatening several others.
A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesperson said all occupants had been safely evacuated and accounted for, with no injuries. FENZ left the scene at 11pm, with Civil Defence stepping in.
No further evacuations were needed overnight.
Meanwhile, Lyttelton resident and Independent Council Candidate for Banks Peninsula Dave Dunlay said, “First and foremost, my thoughts are with the families affected by the slip on Hawkhurst Road – luckily no one was injured. We are a tight community in Lyttelton and we will support the families affected.”

“I have been up to the site this morning and it is likely that all the heavy rain and run off has led to the slip – but that is not confirmed,” Dunlay said.
“The slip was approximately 10 metres x 10 metres – that is a significant piece of land that’s moved. It has come down and damaged a house.
“I believe the cause of the slip will be determined by Christchurch City Council geotechnical staff. I understand they attended the slip last night and are assessing the situation this morning, he said.”
“I encourage everyone living on or near a slope to check where their drainage is running, and look for signs of instability and if they are concerned get some experts to take a look,” Dunlay added.
