An police investigation is continuing into an unexplained death in Christchurch.

Police were called to a property on Main North Road in Papanui at around 2.40pm, where a woman was found in a critical condition.

Despite the efforts of emergency services, the person died at the scene.

A scene guard remains in place while enquiries continue, and the death is being treated as unexplained.

A post mortem is expected to be carried out today.

Police say the public may notice an increased presence in the area as the investigation continues.
