Bromley residents will see a dozen new speed bumps installed as Christchurch City Council begins street upgrades aimed at reducing vehicle speeds and limiting heavy traffic through the area.

The work, which starts Monday 23 June, includes 12 new speed humps, new signage, and upgrades to pedestrian crossings across key streets in the area.

Council Transport Planning and Delivery Manager Jacob Bradbury said the changes were being made in response to community concerns about fast and heavy traffic, particularly near Bromley School.

“Residents have told us they’re concerned about fast, heavy traffic on Bromley streets, including safety around crossing points,” he said.

The first phase of the work targets Hay Street, Keighleys Road and Bromley Road, where the council says road safety for children is a top priority.

Alongside the 12 speed humps, the upgrades include 12 new signs, resurfaced asphalt in five pedestrian areas, tactile paving at six crossings, a new pedestrian refuge island, and refreshed line markings at six locations.

The upgrades were previously part of the Council’s Way Safer Streets programme, with some funding expected to come from central Government’s Transport Choices programme. That funding was scrapped due to a shift in Government priorities.

This phase is now being funded through the Christchurch City Council’s Long Term Plan for 2024 to 2034.

Further improvements will depend on future funding decisions.

To complete the work, temporary traffic lights will create a one-way system through work zones during the day.

Two-way traffic will resume each evening after 7pm. The work is expected to take two to three weeks.

“We know roadworks can be disruptive, and we really appreciate everyone’s patience while we make these important street upgrades for Bromley,” Bradbury said.

The upgrades form part of the Bromley Transport Action Plan, developed with community input and approved by the Waitai Coastal-Burwood-Linwood Community Board in December 2024.
