The tsunami warning issued following Thursday night’s earthquake near Te Anau has been downgraded to a national advisory after the quake’s magnitude was revised to 5.9.
National Emergency Management Agency issued the updated advisory at 10.01pm, replacing all previous warnings related to the event.
Authorities said New Zealand coastal areas could still experience strong and unusual currents and unpredictable surges following the earthquake, which struck about 40 kilometres north of Te Anau at 9.14pm.
PowerNet says there have been no reported earthquake related power outages following tonight’s earthquake.
The electricity network company said a local team member checked substations in the Te Anau area as a precaution.
PowerNet said no damage had been found and all substations appeared to be working normally.
“At this stage, everything is operating as expected, but we’ll keep an eye on things as always,” the company said.
PowerNet said it would provide a further update if conditions changed.
