Tricks, treats and busy streets: Police urge Halloween caution / File

Police are urging families to plan ahead and look out for each other as trick-or-treaters prepare to hit the streets on Saturday night.

Inspector Brett Callander, Manager of Community Prevention and Partnerships, said Halloween coincided with an already busy night for emergency services.

“Halloween falls on a Saturday night this year, and as Saturday evenings are traditionally busy for Police and other emergency services we’d ask that you take care so that we don’t have to turn up in our real life costumes.”

Parents and trusted guardians are encouraged to accompany children, while teenagers should stay with their friends and look out for one another.

“Make sure to plan ahead, stick to well-known areas, and be aware of your surroundings when crossing roads.”

Families can also check community pages to find out which homes are taking part.

Callander said people should respect households that do not want Halloween visitors.

“If you see a sign that says ‘no trick-or-treat here’ or similar, then please respect their wishes.

“Householders do not have to open the door or respond to knocks from Halloween visitors.”

Police said a few simple precautions could help keep the evening safe and enjoyable.

“Halloween is all about having fun, however, it is important for families to tick-off some quick tips before the big night to ensure everyone stays safe.”

Suspicious or unlawful activity happening now should be reported to Police on 111, with as much information as can safely be provided.

Non-emergency reports, including incidents that have already happened, can be made at 105.police.govt.nz or by calling 105. Information can also be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
