Christchurch Airport’s Head of Tourism and Trade Development, Scott Callaway, has received one of the highest honours in New Zealand’s tourism industry, the Sir Jack Newman Outstanding Industry Leader Award.

The award, presented at the New Zealand Tourism Awards in Wellington last night, recognises individuals who have shown long-term leadership, innovation, and influence in shaping the nation’s visitor economy.

Callaway’s 50-year career has spanned some of the country’s most iconic tourism ventures, from his early days as a Mt Hutt ski instructor in the 1970s, to senior roles with the Mount Cook Group, Air New Zealand, and AJ Hackett Bungy.

His leadership has been pivotal in positioning Christchurch as the gateway to the South Island and in building global partnerships that continue to benefit the region and wider industry.

Christchurch Airport Chief Executive Justin Watson said Callaway’s contribution had been immense.

“Scott’s vision, collaboration and respect for people and place have driven sustainable growth across the South Island. He has united communities, operators and international partners to deliver long-term success for our region and country,” Watson said.

Callaway has led major regional initiatives, including Kia Ora South and South, which brought together tourism operators, Ngāi Tahu, and regional agencies to showcase the South Island internationally.

Former Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel said Callaway embodied the attributes of a true industry leader.

“I looked at the attributes that exemplify a lifetime of achievement worthy of this award: integrity, innovation, entrepreneurship, inclusiveness, passion, empowerment, accountability, inspiring, a great communicator, empathy. Every one of those attributes is part of who Scott Callaway is,” Dalziel said.

Accepting the award, Callaway said the recognition belonged to everyone who had shared the journey.

“This industry has given me lifelong friendships, challenges, and an incredible sense of purpose. I’ve simply been part of a much bigger team, people who care deeply about New Zealand, our visitors, and the places we call home,” he said.

“It’s been a privilege to help tell the story of our region and to work alongside so many passionate people dedicated to keeping New Zealand special.”

Watson said Callaway’s humility and generosity had left a lasting mark on the industry.

“Scott’s humility, generosity and relentless optimism make him one of the greats. We’re incredibly proud to see his lifetime of work recognised at a national level and to have him as one of our team,” he said.

Ngāi Tahu gifted the whakatauākī He manawa tītī, he manawa ora, he manawa hūmārie to accompany Callaway’s nomination, describing him as “a man that possesses a resilient, vibrant and humble heart.”
