A 19 year old man has been arrested after a stolen vehicle was driven dangerously through Christchurch early this morning.

A police spokesperson told ChrisLynchMedia.com officers received a report of the stolen vehicle on Moorhouse Avenue about 1.45am.

Police signalled for the driver to stop, but the vehicle fled.

Officers observed the vehicle from a distance before spiking it in an attempt to bring it to a safe stop.

A short pursuit was initiated but abandoned because of the manner of driving.

The spokesperson said the vehicle was at times driven dangerously on the wrong side of the road.

The vehicle later came to a stop on Ferry Road and one person was taken into custody without incident.

The 19 year old man was charged with dangerous driving, possessing instruments to steal vehicles, failing to stop and possessing cannabis.

He is due to appear in Christchurch District Court on 9 October.
