SPCA centres will be opening their doors for an open day this Saturday as they launch a nationwide adoption campaign offering 25 percent off adoption fees.
With over 4,000 animals in their care, and 1,000 ready for immediate adoption, the charity is hoping to clear the shelters these school holidays and see as many animals as possible find loving homes.
The open day on Saturday 13 April means walk-ins are welcome, with no appointment required to meet the animals. Animal lovers can also peruse adoption profiles online before arriving to see who their perfect match might be.
While kitten season normally sees a spike in the number of kittens needing care through the warmer months, the numbers don’t seem to be slowing down. There are also many puppies, rabbits and even pigs, horses, and goats looking for homes too.
SPCA’s General Manager Animal Services Dr Corey Regnerus-Kell said, “Our staff work as hard as they can to provide the best, but ultimately your home offers a better environment for animals to thrive. A little creature is happier when they can engage with humans around them, curled up on your lap or snuggled up at your feet.”
“We have so many beautiful animals ready to find their new family and each comes vaccinated, desexed and microchipped. So please, if you have room in your home and your heart to welcome a pet, this is the time to adopt,” Regnerus-Kell said.
SPCA centres are consistently near capacity, and it is hoped that this adoption campaign will create more room for the ballooning population of unplanned litters SPCA receives every day. Timed perfectly for school holidays, Regnerus-Kell said this is a great time to socialise a new pet with members of the family.
“Imagine how exciting it is for a little kitten or puppy to start its new life in your home with all the joy and activity family life brings. The companionship and cuddles benefit everyone,” he said.
The public are encouraged to visit their nearest SPCA Centre on Saturday to meet their perfect match.
From 13-28 April SPCA’s adoption fees will be discounted to make the process a little easier for everyone.
