A 17-year-old learner driver has had their licence suspended after being caught travelling at more than 150km/h on Christchurch’s Northern Corridor.
The teenager was driving without a supervisor when police detected the vehicle during routine speed checks in mid-October.
Christchurch Road Policing Team Leader Senior Sergeant Richard Carolan said the speed was alarming.
“The posted speed limit on this part of the highway is 100km/h. To be over this by more than half is shocking.
“This type of dangerous driving is extremely thoughtless. You are not just putting your own life at risk, but everyone else on the road who are doing the right thing and following the road rules.”
The teenager has been referred to police Youth Aid.
Carolan said officers were relieved to have intercepted the vehicle before anyone was hurt.
“Police are all too familiar with some of the devastating outcomes of dangerous driving, and I am relieved that we were able to stop this vehicle before a tragedy stopped it for us.”
He warned motorists that police would continue targeting dangerous driving across Christchurch.
“Everyone deserves to get home safely, and we are urging motorists to take a moment and think about everyone else on the road before participating in unsafe driving.”
Police are urging anyone who witnesses dangerous driving in progress to call 111, while non-urgent incidents can be reported through 105.
