A fire near the intersection of State Highway 1 (SH1) and Memorial Avenue has forced the closure of the southbound lanes between Harewood Road and Memorial Avenue this afternoon.

Fire and Emergency crews are on the scene responding to the incident. As a result, southbound traffic is being diverted, and motorists are advised to avoid the area or expect delays.

A fire and emergency spokesperson said crews from Christchurch, Ilam and Christchurch airport are at the scene.

Northbound lanes on SH1 remain open at this time, but authorities are urging caution when travelling through the area.

Drivers heading towards Christchurch Airport or through the western suburbs are encouraged to seek alternative routes while emergency services manage the situation.

Conditions in coastal parts of Canterbury are hot and windy. People are being asked to be exceptionally careful not to undertake any activities that could spark a fire today.
