South New Brighton School was placed into lockdown after police alerted staff to an incident in the surrounding area.
It has now been lifted.
A police spokeswoman told Chris Lynch Media armed officers responded to an incident in South New Brighton on Tuesday afternoon.
“At around 2pm, police were called to Rocking Horse Road after a car collided with two parked vehicles. There are no reported injuries in relation to this incident,” she said.
“It is reported the offender fled the scene with a firearm. Police are making enquiries to identify and locate the offender. Cordons are in place, and members of the public are advised to avoid the area while enquiries are ongoing.”
In a message to parents, Principal Kate McClelland said the decision to enter lockdown was made on police advice to ensure the safety of students and staff.
“Today we have been made aware of an incident in the local area and the police have advised the school to initiate a lockdown procedure. This is to ensure everyone’s safety,” McClelland said.
A mother of a pupil at the school said her son said they had to cover the door with book shelves and pee in a bin. “Poor kids were super scared.”
A school administrator confirmed to chrislynchmedia.com all students were safe.
