A man has died after trying to rescue his dog from the Waimakariri River on Sunday.
Senior Sergeant Stephen McDaniel said the incident was reported to emergency services around 4.30pm.
A helicopter was also sent to the scene.
“Despite the efforts of emergency services, the person died at the scene.
The man had been trying to rescue his dog from the waters when he drowned and died at the scene.
The death will be referred to the Coroner.
