A search operation relating to an aircraft that went missing in 1978 will take place near Lake Moeraki on the West Coast next week.

Police, the New Zealand Defence Force and Coastguard West Coast will carry out the operation in the lake area near Haast, with the public asked to keep clear of the northern boat ramp.

Acting West Coast Area Commander Mark Kirkwood said the search would begin on Monday 21 September and was expected to continue until Wednesday 23 September.

The operation relates to the missing aircraft ZK-EBU.

“The boat ramp at the northern entrance to the lake will be used throughout the search.

“To ensure the safe movement of personnel and equipment, we ask that the area be kept clear for the duration of the operation,” Kirkwood said.

Members of the public may notice an increased presence of personnel during the search.

Police thanked the public for their cooperation and said further information would be provided when appropriate.
