Main Road through Sumner has been closed on Wednesday after a rockfall prompted safety concerns.
Emergency services began receiving calls about falling rocks in the Clifton area from about 9.45am.
Christchurch City Council closed the road, with traffic diversions put in place by police.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand crews attended after being alerted by a member of the public.
Firefighters were at the scene as a precaution.
A Council spokesperson said “Sumner’s Main Road was closed after reports of rocks falling from the hillside in Clifton.
We’re working closely with contractors and Fire and Emergency New Zealand.”
