A Southland intersection will remain closed overnight after a serious two vehicle crash northeast of Invercargill.

The crash happened at the intersection of Grove Bush Woodlands Road and Rakahouka Hedgehope Road at about 5.35pm.

One person was taken to hospital with serious to critical injuries.

A police spokesperson said cordons would remain in place overnight ahead of a scene examination in the morning.

“Motorists are asked to avoid the area and use Mabel Bush Road and Woodstock Road as an alternative route,” the spokesperson said.
